9:00am Visit Mt. Vernon:  The Washington Story – Students  have an opportunity to enjoy an interactive look at the life of George Washington and the story behind the idea and early beginnings of Washington, DC

12:00pm Lunch at Mt. Vernon

1:00pm Busses Depart for the National Mall

 

1:30pm Open Time to Explore the Smithsonian Museums

  • Air and Space Museum
  • National Gallery of Art
  • Natural History Museum
  • American History Museum
  • Botanical and Sculpture Gardens

5:00pm The Washington Monument – Students receive an overview of Washington, DC from 555 feet above.  Visit the top of the Washington Monument for a bird’s eye view of and orientation of the Capitol City

7:00pm Dr. Brian Kamoie – Democracy In Action:  An overview of the Structure and Function of the Three Branches of Government and a Primer on the US Congress

Tuesday, June 21, 2011 – INTRODUCTION TO THE US CONGRESS AND POLICY MAKING

7:00am Breakfast

8:00am Busses depart for Capitol Hill

9:00am Mr. Matt Wyniewski – Historical Director of the Library of Congress - The Legislative Branch In Action – Overview of the daily workings of the US Congress – US Library of Congress

10:00am Mr. Darren Jones – Policy Research Director of the Library of Congress – How the US Congress Utilizes the resources of the Library of Congress to conduct research for policy making

11:30pm Group Photo – The West Front of the US Capitol Building

12:15pm Lunch – The US Capitol Visitors Center

1:00pm Tour of the US Capitol Building

2:00pm Orientation of the Senate and House Galleries – View live Congressional Debates and Policy Proposals from the Galleries of the US Senate and House.
               
3:30pm The NEWSEUM – The Interactive Museum dedicated to the News – Students will attend a short briefing on the First Amendment and the role of the media in politics

Wednesday, June 22, 2011 – EXPLORING THE MARITIME INDUSTRIES AND IMPORTANT ISSUES FOR THIS SECTOR OF THE ECONOMY

9:30am Panel Discussions – Maritime Transportation in the 21st Century – Students have the opportunity to learn about issues in the Maritime Industry from a panel of experts from the US Congress, Military and the Private Sector

11:00am Depart for Baltimore or Annapolis for Lunch and Afternoon Activity

12:00pm Activity and Location TBD based on preferences of the CICF – Sample activities include:

  • Tour of the Baltimore Port System with time to visit Baltimore’s Inner Harbour
  • Tour and Overview of the US Naval Academy with Guest Speaker
  • Visit the US Coast Guard Station for a Tour and Overview of the US Coast Guard
  • The Naval Maritime Museum

5:00pm Return to Campus

7:00pm Dr. James Lengle – Professor of Political Science and International Studies at Georgetown University.   Crafting Legislation – Pulling together the final pieces of your research to create a debatable bill.

Thursday, June 23, 2011 – HONORING PROGRAM SPONSORS AND FINAL MODEL CONGRESS

9:00am  Congressional Breakfast – To Honor Respective Congressional Delegations and Attending Students.

10:30am Open Time for Students to Finalize Model Congress Research and Prepare for Debates and attend relevant committee hearings

12:30pm Lunch – Longworth Food Court

1:30pm Final Model Congress Debates – Each Committee will have the opportunity to present their bill to the entire Model Congress and Debate each policy proposal

4:00pm Busses Depart for Campus

6:00pm Busses depart Campus for the Washington, DC Waterfront

7:00pm Farewell Dinner Cruise and Dance on the Potomac River
